R. Bruce Walker's Jester's Dance
Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 10:09AM I have to admit when I got an email from his wife, I thought sure, I'll read Bruce's book, but I'm not expecting a whole lot. After all, my sister is an author, my Mom is a retired librarian and I've been a voracious reader since birth and often times a first effort leaves a lot to be desired. Jester's Dance however turned out to be a great page turning novel with suspense, intrigue and even a love story, all set in the world of advertising. If you love Mad Men, you're gonna love this book. The novel follows a competition among several advertising agencies for a contract to do the advertising work on behalf of a pharmaceutical company bringing a new wonder diet drug to market. The diet drug promises to be the cure for obesity and the profit potential is of course enormous. Because Bruce Walker is a former ad agency executive himself, he brings a texture to the narrative that you know is real. I'm a lawyer and so oftentimes when I read legal fiction, I find the narrative less than compelling because the author clearly doesn't know what he or she is talking about. Jester's Dance had a ring of authenticity that I often find lacking. The plot is gripping and there's a surprise twist at the end that would surprise even Don Draper. It's a great read and if you haven't picked up a copy yet, get one now.
